The job of an archaeological excavation starts long before the first trowel is pushed into the ground. The standard preliminary work involves a field survey, surface collection, geophysical prospection and comprehensive mapping of the site. Tools and Techniques of Archaeological Excavations
Archaeological excavation today is a combination of old-fashioned hand tools and more modern technologies. The trowel is the basic tool for fine work. It allows excavators to see color and texture changes in the soil that reveal layer changes. Bulk overburden is removed with larger tools such as shovels and mattocks, while smaller finds are collected with brushes, dental picks and sieves. Soil is often dry or wet-sieved to retrieve microscopic artifacts, bone fragments, and botanical remains that would otherwise be missed.
Stratigraphy is the backbone of interpretation. By carefully peeling off layers of earth, archaeologists may reconstruct the sequence of events that happened at a site - occupation, abandonment, flooding, rebuilding, and so on. Features such as postholes, hearths, pits, walls and ditches are recorded in plan and section, photographed and thoroughly documented. The exact position of each artifact is given so that there can be no doubt of its provenance and its relation to other pieces. This is the difference between a professional archeological excavation and casual collecting.
What Archaeology Has Discovered
Every artifact recovered from an archeological excavation, whether spectacular or commonplace, is precious. Pottery sherds, stone tools, metal artifacts, architectural remains, and organic remains such as charcoal, seeds, and bone all assist us to understand past economies, technology, diets, and belief systems. Where the people were buried tells us about their health, social status and ceremonial practices. Dating procedures applied to the retrieved elements from an excavation further refine the chronology. Evidence of dates is given by radiocarbon dating of organic materials, dendrochronology, thermoluminescence and relative dating by typology and stratigraphy. Some sites of water archaeology or wetland sites have amazing preservation of organic remains not commonly retained on dry ground, increasing the extent of archaeological excavation.
Documentation, Conservation and Long Term Value
The quality of an excavation is a consequence of its records. Long after the trenches have been backfilled, the information will be evaluated through detailed notes, measured drawings, photographs, 3-D models and digital databases. Artifacts are kept so they can be researched, displayed or stored safely. The collected data are then used to produce reports, scientific publications, museum displays and public outreach programs to share cultural heritage with wider audiences.
Individual sites are important, but the sum of archaeological excavation across areas allows scholars to follow larger processes: migration, trade networks, technical change, adaptation to environments and the rise and fall of complex cultures. Each tedious dig is another piece of the bigger picture.
Duties and Problems
Archaeological excavation is disruptive by nature. Once the dirt has been removed and the context disturbed, the original arrangement can never be fully restored. This fact is a heavy load on the ethical responsibilities of the practitioners. Judicious decisions are made on what to excavate, how deep to dig and when to leave deposits for future generations with better techniques. Working with local communities, indigenous peoples and historical authorities to ensure the process respects not only scientific aims but living cultural linkages with the past has become routine.
After all, the thrill of discovery is not the point of archaeological excavation; systematic evidence recovery is. When done effectively, it turns anonymous soil into an accessible record of human experience. Archaeological excavation is planned from the outset so that the retrieval of reliable information is maximized and irreversible loss is minimized at all stages, from the beginning to the final publication. It is this delicate balancing that keeps this technique so crucial to our understanding of the deep past of our species.
