Desert & Desert - How Desert Landscapes Work and Their Long-Term Impacts
This very fundamentally dictates climate, the presence of animals and human settlement in the vast desert regions of the earth. The name desert and desert refers to the common characteristics of these harsh but intriguing landscapes that cover much of the surface of the world. Deserts and desert ecosystems range from the shifting sands of the major continents to stony wastelands in surprising places, yet all have distinguishing characteristics and noteworthy regional variances.
They are low-rainfall landscapes with extreme temperature variation and distinctive life forms developed over thousands of years. Desert and desert places provide us a glimpse of the struggles they face, but also the tremendous tenacity they have.
Characteristics of Arid Areas
A desert has traditionally been described as a region that receives very little rain each year. Usually less than 250 millimeters. They have also high rates of evaporation, harsh sun and scarce flora. When people talk about desert and desert conditions, they usually mean regions where the absence of water controls just about everything that happens in the ecosystem.
Not as if high temperatures are anything new. The air is dry and does not hold heat well, thus it can get very hot during the day and then very cold at night. Famous deserts include the Sahara, Arabian Desert, Gobi, Atacama and Mojave deserts. Together they illustrate how desert and desert landscapes are found across continents and climate zones, but have the common problem of too little water.
Life in Harsh Environment
Deserts are tough but they have special plants and animals. Succulents have thick tissues to hold water. Many creatures are nocturnal to escape the heat of the day. Some animals receive all their water from their food and not from free water. These adaptations allow ecosystems to persist in conditions that would be too hard for most species.
Humans have also developed complex lifestyles in and around desert and desert settings. Current practices of dwelling and resource use in dry places are informed by traditional knowledge of water sources, seasonal mobility and adaptive building.

Desertification is a growing problem in many places of the world. Desertification occurs when land that is productive becomes drier. Overgrazing, deforestation, climate change and improper use of water can desertify dry areas or worsen existing deserts.
