The Story of the Invention of the Internet
The internet did not just develop out of the work of one inventor. It was the product of a convergence of demand in military research, theoretical advances, cooperative engineering, and a succession of practical decisions over a span of more than twenty years. To understand the tale of the birth of the internet, you have to look at how the ideals of resilient communication, resource sharing, and open protocols slowly coalesced into the worldwide network we use today.
Origins of the Cold War and the Search for Resilient Networks
In the late 1950s and early 1960s the US looked for communication systems that could endure large interruptions. The traditional telephone network was based on a few centralised and fragile switching points. Scientists began looking for something stronger. At RAND Corporation, Paul Baran invented the concept of distributed networks that used blocks of digital messages, subsequently called packets, which could travel independently and be reassembled at their destination. Close to the same time in the UK, Donald Davies at the National Physical Laboratory independently developed comparable ideas for packet-switching and coined the term “packet.”
The theoretical work of Leonard Kleinrock on queueing theory and data transfer gave the mathematical basis to these approaches. These parallel efforts laid the technical foundations for transporting data in discrete, manageable chunks rather than continuous circuits.
The Vision and ARPA Network
An early concept of connected computers sharing resources and enabling collaborative work was expressed by J.C.R. Licklider during his time at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA). In the mid 1960s Bob Taylor of ARPA’s Information Processing Techniques Office saw the inefficiency of several separate computer terminals and pushed for a network that would provide researchers access to faraway machines.
They brought in Lawrence Roberts to lead the charge. The outcome was ARPANET, a research network that connected computers at universities and research centers. The packet-switching nodes in the network were called Interface Message Processors (IMPs) and were built by Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN). The first four nodes went online in 1969: UCLA, the Stanford Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara and the University of Utah. In practical terms , this was the beginning of what would become the internet . On October 29 , 1969 , the first host-to-host transmission was exchanged between UCLA and SRI.
Protocols, Growth, and the Rise of Inter-Networking
Early ARPANET communication was done using the Network Control Protocol. As the network grew and other types of networks were developed, such as packet radio and satellite systems, the need for a more flexible approach became apparent. Developed in the early 1970s by Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, this was the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP / IP for short. Their innovation enabled an open architecture for the interconnection of different networks, and therefore a genuine “network of networks”.
TCP/IP was developed and tested in the 1970s. In January 1983 , the ARPANET officially switched to TCP/IP , an event that is commonly considered the official birth of the modern internet . The network grew further by academic and scientific links. The NSFNET, later created by the National Science Foundation, provided a crucial backbone that sped the growth of colleges and research institutes.
From research tool to infrastructure for the world
Throughout the 1980s the network was mostly research-oriented and non-commercial. Broader use was enabled by the gradual liberalisation of access, the development of domain name systems and the eventual decommissioning of the original ARPANET in 1990. The research network became the public internet, commercialised in the 1990s. A specialised tool became daily infrastructure with email, file transfer, remote login, and then graphical interfaces.
It is vital to differentiate between the Internet and the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee invented the web at CERN in 1989–1991, providing a user-friendly means to access and link information via the existing internet, thru hypertext and browsers.
